Post Op Day 2

5PM
After a busy day with the highlight clearly being eating noodles, our warrior is all settled into a private room! We are thrilled since he barely slept last night due to all of the lights and noise. His coloring has returned to normal after the transfusions and he seems quite comfortable unless his nurse needs to strip his chest tubes which are extremely painful (heart parents know what I’m talking about!). The plan is to let him relax and maybe go for a walk tonight or tomorrow morning. His lungs have cleared up significantly and the chatter is that he’s probably moving out of the CICU tomorrow!! We love how stunned everyone is at his progress!

1PM
Apollo continues to progress nicely. His IJ line (IV line in his neck) was able to come out just a bit ago. This brought some relief to the entanglement of tubes which was causing his nurse some frustration. He sat up in a chair with Daddy for about an hour while Mommy was able to have some breakfast. The plan as of right now is to get him to “floor stats” which means he is stable enough to move out of the ICU and onto the cardiac care floor. That will hopefully be tomorrow morning.

8:45AM
Apollo had an eventful night without much sleep (don’t let the 1st pic deceive you!) and he got to eat for the first time since Thursday night! Bread and apple juice made him a very happy boy. He really loves getting chest PT and has been giving us some great coughs. He’s doing spectacular and I even heard the attending say “wow, this kid is doing great”.

Since this was such a big surgery, complications are expected and he’s having a few. His right chest tube is putting out too much fluid so they had to replace the bulb with a drain box which can catch it all and a chest x-ray showed fluid accumulating in his right lung. His hematocrit is also too low so he’s going to get another blood transfusion and also some platelets this morning. He’s got some fighting to do and he’s doing it with a smile. I think his smile shows how happy he is to be alive! He fell asleep last night as we said our prayers and thanked God for giving him such a strong and special heart. Our God is so good and we are praising Him for our little miracle boy!

  1. Yay for noodles and an even bigger Yay for a private room!!!! Apollo, you are a superstar and are so brave. Keep it up, little man! You're going to be home in no time. We are praying for your drainage to slow down so those awful tubes can come out. Lots of walking will help that more than anything. We're cheering for you!
